4 out of 5 local businesses in South Wales West feel unsupported according to survey

Sioned Williams MS’s survey into small business owners reveals rising costs, and lack of support are biggest challenges

A survey run by Sioned Williams MS into experiences of small local business owners and sole traders in South Wales West has revealed that 83% feel they do not get enough support. 

In addition, 64% of respondents said their biggest challenge was increased costs.  

In the Senedd today (Tuesday 17 March), Sioned Williams MS asked the First Minister whether she believes the support offered by Welsh Government needs to go further. She pointed to examples of new businesses in Neath Town Centre and Market which, she said, “contribute enormously to our community and shared wellbeing”.  

The First Minister confirmed that, after investment in the Transforming Towns programme, the Welsh Government has commissioned an evaluation of the programme. 

Sioned Williams MS, Member of Senedd for South Wales West, said: 

“Small businesses have told me via my survey that they don’t get enough support, advice or information from government. Coupled with this, we know that Wales has some of the lowest levels of footfall in its town centres.  

“In Neath, where I’ve had my office since being elected, I’ve been delighted to welcome new businesses to the town centre, especially since the loss of some  so-called ‘anchor stores’ like Marks and Spencer. But I’m hearing just how tough it is for small businesses to compete against the larger businesses, which are better able to absorb increasing costs. 

“Every day, small local businesses across Wales contribute enormously to our economy and to our communities and our shared well-being. I would like to see more support to ensure small, independent, local businesses in our high streets can flourish.”
